Northern Rivers Rail Trail Project

Northern Rivers Rail Trail

The Northern Rivers Rail Trail is a 132Km recreational trail that will follow the disused Casino to Murwillumbah railway corridor. The Tweed and Richmond Valley sections are scheduled to open in 2022/2023. The Rail Trail will be a hero experience for the North Coast providing visitors the opportunity to enjoy exceptional nature-based and recreational experiences. It has great potential to support local businesses, create jobs and boost the economy.

Northern Rivers Rail Trail Product & Experience Development Project

The Northern Rivers Rail Trail Product & Experience Development Project is one of the high- profile tourism projects being implemented by Destination North Coast as part of the Federal Government‘s Recovery for Regional Tourism Fund.

The project will inspire, support and empower tourism businesses to develop and advance their product and experience offerings to leverage the Rail Trail. Local consultants, Wray Sustainable Tourism Research and Planning have been engaged to work with Destination North Coast to design and deliver the Project.

Project Stages

Stage One: Northern Rivers Rail Trail Product and Experiences Audit

The audit will identify the tourism products and experiences that currently exist in and along the 132 kilometre rail corridor. The audit is an important initial stage of the Project to inform recommendations on a path forward in developing products and experiences that will enhance and build on the Rail Trail as a Hero Experience. The audit will:

  • Identify areas of potential development and new opportunities for products and experiences in and around the Rail Trail
  • Identify potential hubs and precincts of products and experiences on and around the Rail Trail.
  • Highlight best practices from successful Rail Trails and other related projects

This work will span across the four Local Government Areas (LGAs) – Richmond Valley, Lismore, Byron and Tweed and the nearby LGAs of Ballina and Kyogle.

Stage Two: Northern Rivers Rail Trail Product and Experience Development Program

Audit findings will be used to inform Stage Two of the Project including Rail Trail Product & Experience Development Workshops and Mentoring.

The workshops will commence in November 2021, and will include engaging local tourism businesses, LGAs and stakeholders to focus on Rail Trail product and experience development ideas and opportunities including packaging and bundling.

From this, a Rail Trail Product & Experience Development Mentoring  Program will be offered from December 2021 to April 2022 to a targeted group of tourism operators that have expressed a genuine interest in enhancing their current tourism offerings or creating new Rail Trail products and experiences.
